Overview

The Eastern Algarve, often referred to as the Leeward Algarve, unfolds gracefully between Vila Real de Santo António and Faro. It is a region defined by light, space, and serenity, where the landscape opens into long horizons, and nature reveals itself in subtle, refined beauty. Along the Bay of Cádiz, a broad, uninterrupted strip of golden sand extends for miles, from the mouth of the Guadiana River, which marks the natural border with Spain, to the eastern part of the Ria Formosa near Tavira. Soft, rolling dunes form a delicate barrier between the shoreline and the inland pine forests, creating a sense of harmony and privacy.

To the west, the scenery changes into the extraordinary ecosystem of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, stretching from Cacela Velha to the Ludo area near Faro Airport. This unique lagoon system is protected from the open Atlantic by a chain of barrier islands and peninsulas, resulting in calm, clear waters. The Ria Formosa is one of Portugal’s most important nature reserves, home to a rich variety of birdlife, marine creatures, and salt marshes, an ever-changing landscape shaped by tides, light, and seasons.

At the center of this region is Tavira, a charming and elegant fishing town that perfectly blends history and natural beauty. Often described as one of the Algarve’s most stylish towns, Tavira is embraced by the surrounding natural paradise of the Ria Formosa islands, where pristine sandy beaches meet transparent turquoise waters. These islands offer a peaceful escape, only reachable by boat, and remain some of the Algarve’s most exclusive coastal destinations.

From the high viewpoint of Tavira Castle, visitors can enjoy a sweeping view over the town. Below, the Gilão River gently flows through the historic center, passing under the Roman Bridge and reflecting the soft tones of the surrounding buildings. Cobbled streets wind between whitewashed facades and distinctive pyramid-roofed buildings, centuries-old features that give Tavira its unique character. From this vantage point, history, scenery, and daily life come together in a scene of timeless beauty, inviting us to pause and fully appreciate the essence of the Eastern Algarve.
